Privacy Policy
PastPresent (“the App”) is a rephotography application that lets you overlay historic photos on your camera viewfinder to capture matching present-day images. This policy explains what data the App collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. It applies to the App on both Apple App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android).
The short version
Your photos and locations never leave your device. There are no accounts and nothing is uploaded to us. The only data that goes anywhere is what Google AdMob needs to show a banner ad in the free version — and you can turn even that down.
Data we collect
Camera access
The App requires camera access to capture photos and record video. Camera data is processed entirely on your device. Photos and videos are saved to your device’s local storage only.
Location data
With your permission, the App captures your device’s GPS coordinates when you take a photo. This location data is:
- Embedded in the photo’s EXIF metadata (standard photo geotagging), and
- Stored locally in the App’s database on your device.
Location data is never transmitted to any server. It remains entirely on your device. You can deny location permission and the App will still work — photos will simply not include GPS coordinates.
Local storage
The App stores project data, photo references, and settings in an encrypted local database on your device. This data is not backed up to cloud services by the developer and is not accessible to us.
Advertising
The free version of the App displays banner advertisements provided by Google AdMob. AdMob may collect:
- An advertising identifier (Android Advertising ID, or Apple’s IDFA on iOS where permitted),
- Device information (model, OS version),
- Approximate location based on IP address (not GPS), and
- App-usage signals used to select and measure ads.
On iOS, the App asks for your permission through Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt before any advertising identifier is used for personalised ads. In the EEA and UK, the App shows a Google-certified consent (UMP) message and respects your choice.
You can opt out of personalised advertising at any time:
- iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking (turn off “Allow Apps to Request to Track”), and Settings → Privacy & Security → Apple Advertising.
- Android: Settings → Google → Ads → “Opt out of Ads Personalisation” (or “Delete advertising ID”).
For more information, see Google’s Advertising Privacy Policy.
In-app purchases
The App offers a one-time premium upgrade through Google Play Billing (Android) and Apple’s App Store / StoreKit (iOS). Purchase transactions are handled entirely by Google and Apple. The developer does not collect or store any payment information.
Crash diagnostics
If a crash occurs, the App may send an anonymous crash report (stack trace and basic device/OS details) to help us fix the problem. These reports contain no photos, no location, and no information that identifies you. Crash reporting is limited to crashes only — there is no general analytics or usage tracking.
Data we do not collect
- We do not collect your name, email, or any personal identification.
- We do not upload your photos to any server.
- We do not track your location in the background.
- We do not have user accounts or registration.
- We do not collect analytics or usage data beyond the advertising and crash-diagnostics described above.
- We do not sell your data, and we do not share data with third parties except Google AdMob (advertising) as described above.
Data storage and security
All App data — projects, photos, settings, and premium status — is stored locally on your device in an encrypted database. No data is transmitted to or stored on external servers operated by the developer.
Children’s privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. The free version contains advertising, which may not be appropriate for children.
Your rights
Because all data is stored locally on your device, you have full control:
- Delete data: Uninstalling the App removes all locally stored data.
- Clear data: On Android, use Settings → Apps → PastPresent → Clear Data. On iOS, delete and reinstall the App.
- Deny permissions: Revoke camera, photo, or location permission at any time in your device settings.
- Opt out of ad personalisation: Via your device settings, as described under “Advertising”.
If you are in a region with data-protection laws such as the GDPR (EEA/UK), the lawful basis for the limited processing above is your consent (advertising) and our legitimate interest in providing and improving the App (crash diagnostics). Since we hold no personal data on our servers, requests to access or erase data are satisfied by the on-device controls above.
Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in the “Last updated” date above.
